Asbestos Removal – Laindon Shopping Centre

Inner City Environmental who are one of the leading asbestos removal companies in Essex and the South East have started work for one of our established clients at the Laindon shopping Centre.

Laindon Shopping Centre was built in the late 60’s and early 70’s as Laindon Village was redeveloped to follow on from the development of Basildon Town Centre.

Like most buildings of that time it contained asbestos and now with the planned regeneration it is time for it to be demolished. That is where we step in.

Work as begun on this project which is valued in the region of £250k over a 14 week project duration. The enclosure shown in the pictures is 110m x 5m x 5m and for the removal of 220m2 of AIB under controlled conditions.

The overall project consists of a mixture of notifiable and non-notifiable works.

This is typical of the type of projects we are currently working on.

    Domestic Asbestos Removal Kent

Our presence on Google pays off as we were contacted by a lady in Tunbridge Wells recently. The previous owners had put some nice decking down in the garden. Little did she know that buried underneath it was damaged asbestos insulating board and asbestos cement. She had the good sense to go on Google and of course our name came up as a leading Asbestos Removal Contractor in Kent.

Obviously this was quite a serious matter and Inner City were able to respond with a solution to her problem.

Inner City removed all visible asbestos material under controlled conditions, we had air monitoring throughout our works, which were all below the control limit.

    Our client was very pleased;

“You and your team were AMAZING!

You explained everything in detail to me, so I knew what exactly was going on and then Colin and the boys did the rest.

They were polite, professional and friendly…what more could I hope for and you all turned, what was a nasty shock, into a process that left me feeling happy and positive again.

The area looks better than it was originally.”

Asbestos Specialist Teams At Tooley’s Court, Ipswich

As a company Inner City Environmental will always work to help worthwhile causes and initiatives in the community.

Asbestos Specialist Team Worked with Tooley’s Court, Ipswich

Founded in 1550, Tooley’s Court provides picturesque sheltered accommodation in the heart of Ipswich. The choice of bedsits and one bedroom flats offer residents an independent way of life within a caring and supportive community.

Tooley’s Court owes more than 400 years of development to Henry Tooley who in 1550 first provided houses for the elderly in Ipswich.

Today Tooley’s Court is administered by Ipswich Foundation Street Charity whose Trustees are local men and women working together to provide independant sheltered accommodation.

Over the years a number of generous donations have helped to ensure an extensive programme of expansion and modernisation.

Tooley’s Court will continue to benefit from the wide ranging support it receives from the community.

Our asbestos specialist teams had to work very closely with the team at Tooley’s Court to ensure residents were able to remain in the accommodation. The work was completed successfully and the management team were very pleased with the work.

Helen Hewitt passed on this message:

“Would you please pass on my sincere thanks to Carl, Cain and the team for the work they carried out at Tooley’s Court.
They were very professional and extremely considerate to the elderly residents who live at Tooley’s.”

    Asbestos Specialist Removal Phase One

Because of the age of Tooley’s Court the building contains asbestos as is the case with many buildings of a similar age and is completely safe to the residents living there. However the long term plans for such buildings are to remove the asbestos in a phased programme.

Inner City were approached to carry out work to remove asbestos from the communal areas and were only to happy to help out by donating the work needed at cost.

  • Asbestos information – MoD SeaKing Helicopter technicians

Asbestos information – MoD SeaKing Helicopter technicians

The Mail on Sunday recently revealed important asbestos information in a report stating that the Ministry of Defence is urgently removing parts from Sea King Helicopters. The Sea King came into service some 50 years ago. The parts are thought to contain harmful asbestos.

    What does this mean?

The worrying part of this is that thousands of engineers may have been affected over the years.  Therefore the Ministry is trying to track down staff who have worked on these aircraft since they were brought into service. Pilots are not said to be at risk.

Anyone contacted by the MoD has been given detailed instructions on what to do.

Foreign governments and civilian organisations who purchased these helicopters have also been contacted.

5,000 People Die Annually From Asbestos-Related Illness

Staggeringly 5,000 people die a year from asbestos related illnesses through fibres being released when asbestos is disturbed.

The British Lung Foundation advises that most people who are exposed to asbestos do not develop serious illnesses.

    Search and rescue

The MOD warning comes after an official report into the death of an Australian serviceman was attributed to exposure to asbestos, petrol or other toxins while working on a naval base.

Petty Officer Greg Lukes, a technician who maintained Sea Kings in Australia, died four years ago from an aggressive form of rare cancer.

The Sea King has been used extensively in  conflicts from the Falklands War to Afghanistan.

In its role as a search and rescue craft, it flew on 14,595 missions over a 31 year period

However the ageing aircraft is being gradually replaced. Search and rescue missions have now been taken on  by privately operated Sikorsky S-92s and AgustaWestland AW189s as the Royal Navy switches to Merlin helicopters.

If anyone has concerns about their contact in a working environment for the MOD. In other cases, not involving the MoD, workers and their families have been awarded hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation after they developed mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer, from asbestos.

  • The old curiosity shop – the dangers of asbestos

The old curiosity shop – the dangers of asbestos

Beware the old curiosity shop – dangers of asbestos

In the early eighties buying an Edwardian or 1930’s house meant an upsurge in people people scouring the local antiques fairs and junk shops.

They would be looking for little curios that would help capture the ambience of the bygone era and display as ornaments. Old household appliances suddenly had a new lease of life. The dangers of asbestos would have never entered their heads and probably not with people getting their hands on these curios to this day.

They are typically the old iron which can be adapted to become a doorstop, old radios, coffee pot, hair dyers, clothes dryers, ironing boards and iron rests.

Whilst not representing a danger if left undisturbed the minute some of these are handled, dismantled or in the case of electrical items switched on then they become a lethal hazard.

Old hair dryers are the worst because of the asbestos insulation enclosing the heating element. The heating elements were often soft and friable which meant when switched on they release fibres into the air.

As you can appreciate if anyone has these and turn on for Friable asbestos was also contained in the wire insulation.

Wear and tear makes the wires fray and have the potential to release fibres.

There are still a lot of junk shops around containing items from house clearances and asbestos could be lurking so ensure you seek advice before buying.
