Inner City Environmental talk Asbestos to Kent Scouts

In-keeping with their corporate social responsibility values, Inner City Environmental Limited gave local Scouts a helping hand to clear asbestos from their hall grounds, last Friday.

Marketing & Bid manager, Alan Knight along with project administrator, Lilly Clark arranged for a specialist engineer to attend the headquarters of 9th Dartford Scout Group, in Heath Lane, to safely remove and dispose of seven asbestos sheets.

Group Scout Leader, Neil Gearing had contacted local asbestos removal companies for assistance and was very pleased to hear from Inner City Environmental Limited who offered their experience and expertise to undertake this task for free. The Scout Troop of 11 to 14 year olds, took a keen interest in the asbestos removal and asked questions about the hazardous material – all from a safe distance. Once the sheets were safely removed, the Scouts were happy to be photographed alongside ICE’s vehicle, and to thank the engineer for his time. Observing the current covid-19 restriction those Scouts aged 11 year and above wore masks, and all maintained social distancing apart from the 30 seconds photo-shoot.
“It is great to see local business, like ICE, are willing to support Scouting in Dartford by using their skills and expertise for the benefit of young people. 9th Dartford are very grateful to all at Inner City Environmental Limited for arranging the removal of the asbestos in such a short space of time” said Neil Gearing.

  • Follow the correct procedures

    Follow the correct procedures

On a recent walk in the Country one of our members of staff walked past a piece of land that had been sold for redevelopment. For years an old asbestos garage had stood there looking quite dejected.

The sight that met his eyes filled him with annoyance. So much so he decided to take a picture with his phone.

The asbestos had been removed, using what method was unclear. There were no sealed asbestos bins on site whatsoever. The asbestos was stacked on top of each other and spread throughout the area. As our staff member had just finished taking the picture, an old couple arrived on site and asked if they could help. Our staff member pointed out that in the very least, the asbestos sheeting required to be covered. If their contractor had followed correct removal procedures, it was not evident. Additionally, it was made clear that the outcome would not be good if the HSE saw this. “We are taking care of it,” was the reply and not to be so abrupt. It shows that the general public is still very ignorant about asbestos. If you have a garage, shed, or barn, make sure you research how to remove asbestos sheeting correctly or ask a professional to do it for you. The sheets have to be removed using the correct protective clothing, sprayed and wrapped before going into a sealed bin, and then removed by a licensed waste contractor. Do correctly – https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/essentials/ If you have a similar project where you require asbestos sheeting to be removed contact us. We will be going back to the site to check that they have taken our advice.

  • Asbestos in Bitumen

    Asbestos in Bitumen

Bitumen is a black, tacky and hardwearing. It was commonly used to glue floor tiles in place and can be found in many buildings constructed before 2000. Whilst the substance is harmless it can be very difficult to remove without specialist equipment.

But, it can also contain asbestos and this is when you will need specialist Asbestos Removal company to remove it for you.

    Bitumen containing asbestos

Bitumen coatings (used up to 1992) usually contain  up to 8% chrysotile asbestos. Asbestos floor tiles and coverings are unlikely to release fibre under normal conditions, but asbestos fibres might be released when the material is cut or disturbed. Old bitumen can become brittle and powdery and if it contains asbestos it will be very dangerous if the dust is inhaled. An asbestos survey will reveal if the bitumen contains asbestos. Guidance by the government can be found here on removal

    Bitumen mastics and adhesives

Bitumen mastics and adhesives usually contain a small percentage of asbestos and were used up to 1992.

How to tell if glue is asbestos?

Check to see if any cracked tiles are dark grey or or black underneath.  Mastic containing asbestos is always black. Should you have a cracked or missing tile and a black paste where the tile used to be can be seen, it could be asbestosShould the mastic have been exposed to the open air for a long time, it may have a grey tint.

Demolishing a building with bitumen containing asbestos on the slab

When a building is to be demolished any adhesive containing asbestos must be removed from floor slabs. If it is left the waste  material may be treated as contaminated.

  • Asbestos Removal Contract Update – July

Asbestos Removal Contract Update – July

    Contract News

Since returning back to work after an initial suspension of work due to the lockdown Inner City Environmental are carrying on where they left off. A very full order book is keeping our asbestos teams very busy indeed.

Here is an Asbestos removal contract update for July.

    Asbestos Removal Contract Update

Tooley Court Alms houses – A charity based in Ipswich providing elderly residents accommodation. Inner City have previously worked here carrying out removal of internal AIB panels. We are now carrying out a full environmental clean and encapsulation to the external boiler room and workshop, thermal insulation residue to the walls.

Bury Street West Depot – A former Council depot, our scope of works consists of the removal of thermal insulation residue to the boiler room along with floor tiles, bitumen and other non-notifiable works.

Chalk Lane Hotel, Epsom – A grade 2 listed former hotel, our scope of works consist of the removal of textured decorative coatings to various locations along with AIB panels internally. This is due to the former building contractors not carrying out the required R&D Survey. The contractors removed and deposited large amounts of broken AIB removed from within the property in the rear gardens, this has caused severe contamination to the land.

Pinewood film studios, Slough – This is 6 weeks work to remove thermal insulation to the external pipe work, this will be carried out in conjunction with Inner City Scaffolding. They will be supplying the licensed scaffold crash decks to enable us to create our enclosures and remove the ACM’s.  This is quite a tricky section of the works as the access roads will need to remain open to traffic during the course of our works. We are also carrying out removal of pipe insulation within the existing trenches internally along with AIB firebreaks to various locations.

Aspen House, Camden – This is an 8 weeks contract to remove AIB panels, thermal insulation under a gym floor, AC roof sheets, floor tiles, bitumen, sink pads etc. The building is a seven storey residential block of flats along with the outbuildings which include a gym, garage blocks and storage areas.

Fujitsu Services, Basingstoke – we will be returning here later this month to carry out the removal of non-asbestos ceiling tiles, grid and other services, once this has been removed we can then access the textured decorative coatings on plasterboard above. This is phase 2 of the works and phase 1 was completed last month, on time and under budget. Project duration 4 weeks.

Royal Liberty School – Works are still progressing well at the school where we have picked up further phases of removal works and this will potentially turn a 6 week project into a 12 week project. We had an unannounced ARCA audit which we passed with an A, and recently we had an HSE visit which also went very well. The inspector commented that our site was very good run site and was impressed with our new POW template.

Please contact us for more information on our full range of environmental services.

Once visually clean we will begin the sealing of all joints with silver foil tape before a full encapsulation of all surfaces in nice pretty pink ET-15

    Client Praise

Heather Williams, Project Manager for our Client EPS commented “We are in week 3 of our 8 week asbestos strip out programme here at Fujitsu, I want to say thank you for the efforts from the ICE team so far. I appreciate that the lessons from previous floors and our discussions have been heeded by ICE. The paperwork, site set up, waste runs etc have all so far gone very well. The on site client from Fujitsu has also commented to me that the site is very well presented. She is also please that the paperwork has been issued in advance of the works starting and for the waste notes being sent in a timely fashion. Let’s keep up the good work guys, it is really working in our favour having such a strong team on site.”

  • Farewell Boleyn

    Farewell Boleyn

    Asbestos Removal Works East London

In 2016 Inner City Environmental were appointed by Rye Demolition to carry out Asbestos Removal at the Boleyn, former home of West Ham United FC.

A very emotional project for many of the West Ham supporters amongst our workforce.

It was a sad day in East London for all West Ham Fans when Rye Demolition rolled up to start the demolition of the Boleyn Ground. A scene far removed from the last game under lights against Manchester United where fans said goodbye in what was a fantastic night for fans. Many of the workforce at Inner City were at the game. Inner City has carried out Asbestos Removal at some unusual places which have included several so-called haunted buildings. Therefore working with our client Rye Demolition to remove the asbestos from the Boleyn was a mix of excitement tinged with sadness as we saw the ground demolished bit by bit. Some of us who were Season Ticket holders did manage to sneak a last sit in our seats. Unfortunately, we were not permitted to get any memorabilia.  Now I think we would all rather demolish the London Stadium instead and return to Green Street. Our work included a mix of notifiable and non-notifiable works Have a look at the demolition images on the Rye Demolition website – Link Rye demolition donated bricks from the memorial wall to Charity – Link The site has subsequently been redeveloped by Barratt Homes. Inner City also were involved in Asbestos Removal work at Upton Park Bus Garage which was next to the Boleyn.

  • Lead Paint Removal Services

    Lead Paint Removal Services

    Dangers associated with lead paint

Were you aware that  old leaded paint can be serious risk to your health in the same way asbestos removal is? It was used extensively before the 1980’s. It can be hidden under old coatings and if paint is removed by sanding, blow torches or heat guns set to above 500 C releases dust particles and fumes that are extremely dangerous to health.</p.

Before carry out an Asbestos R&D survey a Lead Survey should be carried  to prevent any lead exposure risks to these surveyors.

    Lead surveys who needs one?

    • Clients/CDMC’s/Principle Designers – are responsible for the commissioning of refurbishment and demolition work where paint surfaces will be disturbed;
    • Principle Contractors, Sub-Contractors and Maintenance Contractors – anyone responsible for the organisation/undertaking of works which may disturb painted surfaces;
    • Facilities Managers – Where the duty exists to protect building occupants from potential exposure to Lead Paint hazards such as Lead Paint on friction surfaces, impact surfaces or deteriorated/flaking paintwork in the workplace
    • Custodians of Infrastructure – Flaking or deteriorated Lead Paint on or within an asset which includes pylons or bridges can present danger to adjacent neighbours and the wider public when flakes and particles become airborne
A  lead paint survey is required for all relevant projects under The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, 2015 (‘CDM’) plus The Control of Lead at Work Regulations
