However Hotels are usually busy all year round and asbestos removal can cause major disruptions to operations.

    Asbestos Removal Elvetham Hotel

Therefore with the methods and practices of asbestos removal work and the introduction of Social distancing measures we have resumed work on a number of projects. Currently we are working at the Victorian Gothic Elvetham Hotel in Hook Hampshire carrying out removal work of licensed and non licensed asbestos.

This is a grade 2 listed building.

We are currently removing thermal pipe insulation to 7 x boiler room tunnels previously used as a wine cellar and cheese store, this area is under confined space regulations due the make up of the tunnels, we have also discovered pipe insulation to the ceiling voids and within the main building roof void which is all being removed under fully controlled conditions.

Pigeon guano removal completed to 3 floors of the listed water tower located just outside the grounds of the main buildings.

The works began on the 15th April and have adopted all the current guidelines in relation to Covid-19, we expect to complete these works by the 5th June. Project value £96,000.

Asbestos Removal Essex – Frequently asked questions

Asbestos Removal Essex – What is Asbestos?

As a Contractor we get asked many questions about Asbestos Removal Essex. Asbestos is a word which describes six natural materials. These include amosite, actinolite, anthophyllite, chrysotile, crocidolite and tremolite. Although asbestos is illegal in the United Kingdom, it is still present in old buildings and presents dangers.

It was conventional for insulation, flooring and roofing. The reason asbestos was widely used was because of its natural resistance to heat, fire and electricity. It was considered an ideal material to enhance buildings safety. Before 1985, asbestos was legal and is now most commonly found in roofing, building insulation & roofing.

    The HSE regulations 2000

Asbestos use was not completely banned in the United Kingdom until there was a connection discovered between the material and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is cancer associated with the lining of the lungs.

What does the term ACM mean?

ACM actually ‘Asbestos-Containing Material’ and applies to any material which contains over 1% asbestos. Asbestos-Containing Materials are hazardous when inhaled. That is why the use and production of the material are no longer allowed within the UK.

    Where is asbestos found?

Although asbestos was mostly used in the building industry, it was also extensively used within products from other sectors, these include:
    • Asbestos cloth, string and rope
    • Hairdryers
    • Asbestos cement sheets and roof tiles
    • Wallboards
    • Ceiling Tiles
    • Ovens
    • Boilers
    • Hairdryers
    • Irons
    • Ironing board covers
    • Toasters
    • Brake-pads and brake-pad linings
    • Clutch facings
    • Floor Tiles
    • Mastics and Sealants
    • Toilet cisterns
    • Posts and fencing
    • Planters

Can I take my asbestos sample and take it for testing myself?

Asbestos is linked to mesothelioma if inhaled; Inner City Environmental recommends that a professional takes a sample for health and safety. However, testing for asbestos does not require an asbestos licence. UKAS accredited asbestos testing kits can be purchased online. On the collection of your asbestos sample, it will have to be tested at a UKAS accredited laboratory. On purchase, your testing kit fee may include the laboratory fee, so it is worth checking. Find an accredited lab. Locations

PPE clothing – must be worn when removing asbestos

During removal of Asbestos-Containing Materials, there is a substantial likelihood that fibres will break off and become airborne meaning that special safety equipment is needed to protect those working within the areas around the asbestos.

    Overalls

The protective clothing Inner City Environmental wear are dustproof and conform to HSE regulations. These overalls cover footwear and are taped at the wrists to ensure asbestos fibres do not get underneath and become attached to our operatives clothing.

    Gloves

    Disposable single-use gloves

    Footwear

Toe capped rubber boots with no laces are worn and protect the feet from falling objects. These boots are easy to clean.

    Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)

The most critical aspect of PPE clothing is it protects operatives from inhaling asbestos fibres.  The RPE equipment Inner City use has a UK protection factor of 20 as a minimum Our workforce selects PPE equipment which is most suitable for them in terms of it and suitability. Our workforce can wear a half-mask RPE that has a P3 filter, for non-licensed works. When working with higher risk licensable materials, operatives wear full-faced powered respirators which conform to EN147

    Risk assessments for Asbestos Removal

Risk assessments must be carried out to conform to health and safety regulations. They must be carried out by a trained asbestos professional who has the experience and expertise of working with asbestos. The risk assessment will be carried out at an early enough stage to ensure that special control measures can be put in place before the asbestos removal begins: Asbestos risk assessments cover
    • To control the risk of working with asbestos.
    • Establish alternative risks, which include working at height and other dangerous scenarios and provide measures to reduce those risks, and ensure a safe working environment.
    • Inform the workers of the risks involved.
    The risk assessment should include-
    • The measured amount of asbestos detected in a survey.
    • Asbestos types that need removal.
    • Special control measures.
    • Details of the decontamination procedures
    • Waste transfer information
    • Emergency procedures

What are the health risks of asbestos?

Asbestos becomes a considerable health risk when inhaled into the lungs in more significant than average volumes. It can cause asbestosis and mesothelioma. The more asbestos taken into the lungs will almost certainly increase the chances of developing asbestos-related diseases.

    Asbestosis – what is it?

Asbestosis will not usually show itself until about 20-30 years after a lot of asbestos has been inhaled into the lungs. It causes scarring of the lungs. It produces a gradual hardening and shrinking of the lungs, resulting in them not being able to hold as much air.

    Mesothelioma – what is it?

Mesothelioma is lung cancer that develops in the space between the lining of the lungs called the pleural membrane. It causes the pleural membrane to thicken as it grows. Breathing becomes harder.

    Is asbestos dangerous to touch?

Asbestos and ACM materials are not considered a danger to health providing the asbestos fibres do not become airborne. They become airborne if disturbed by scraping, sanding or rubbing. Asbestos that is not disturbed and in good condition and re not though to be a danger to health.

I have been exposed to asbestos once – am I in danger

Asbestos exposure has no defined levels of risk. Much of the asbestos that someone inhales is caught within the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, thus stopping it from reaching the lungs, where it becomes a danger to health. Diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma will develop after several years. Asbestos in Schools – The Dangers of hidden Asbestos in Schools

Inner City Environmental carry out asbestos removal work in schools on a regular basis. We came across this article which we have summarised from the BBC News Online about Asbestos in Schools especially after Kent County Council have recently been fined £200,000 over Asbestos at a School in Sittingbourne.

    https://www.kentonline.co.uk/sittingbourne/news/council-fined-200k-over-school-asbestos-188991/

Is There Asbestos in Your Child’s School?

You probably would not know if there is Asbestos in your child’s school.  A leading teaching union has raised concerns about a probable “ticking time-bomb” in schools.  It asks what measures are being put in place to protect pupils and teachers to protect against asbestos still contained in many schools.

The dangers of asbestos are well publicised and documented. Asbestos was banned in 1999. It was regularly used in the construction industry before 1999.  This included some schools built before this date and asbestos still contained in these schools.

Staggering statistics show that more than 200 teachers have died since 2001 from mesothelioma, this is a form of cancer associated with asbestos, according to the National Education Union, Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos fibres.

Usually the disease develops more than 20 years after exposure.

Children are five times more likely to contract the disease than adults aged 30, government research has found.

The HSE said that, properly managed, it presents a “very low risk” to people occupying school buildings.

A study conducted in the North West has found that just over half of schools in the North West are known to contain asbestos,  but a frightening statistic is that local authorities do not know if 44% of schools contain asbestos or not.

This is because many schools (61%) are outside LEA control including academies and free schools.

Peter Middleman who is a representative of the NEU in the North West has said according to a BBC News article online that

“If you start from a position that asbestos causes cancer in children, or children who are exposed to asbestos go on to get cancer in later life, then your starting position needs to be that it’s removed as a priority,” he said.

“They’re paying £7bn to renovate the House of Commons, another £150m to renovate the Royal Palaces. It would take £13bn to get schools up to a satisfactory standard without removing asbestos. It’ll cost more to do it properly but we think it’s worth paying. The powers that be have an obligation to ensure this isn’t a ticking time-bomb.”

A survey by the teachers’ union in March 2017 found that 46% of teachers had been told that their school contained asbestos but about half of those said they had not been told where it was located.

Mr Middleman said he acknowledged that schools are under financial pressure but said “knowledge is power”.

“If we know where the incidents are likely to take place, we know where the asbestos is, then we can manage that,” he said.

Asbestos in Schools – The Real Costs

    Former teacher dies!

Michele Reed, a former French Teacher from St Helens, died from mesothelioma in February 2017.

She had worked at schools in the North West for her entire working life.

Michele was convinced she had been exposed to asbestos at a school where she worked which she recalled had dusty classrooms.

Ms Gibbins said to live with the “injustice” of her mother’s death was “horrible.”

“She did not deserve to be in an environment where potentially there’s a danger that if you do this for so long, or even if you do this for five minutes, if you’re in the building with it, that’s it; it’s going to end your life very abruptly and very traumatically at an early stage.”

The HSE requires all employers to notify them if asbestos is released into the air “sufficient to cause potential damage to the health of any person”.

It said  they had received approx 40 reports from schools annually for the past five years.
A spokesman added that many of the reports related to work undertaken by contractors in areas away from pupils and staff or at weekends in the school holidays.

But the regulations that require asbestos disturbances to be reported to the HSE, “do not require the number of school staff and pupils who may have been exposed in incidents to be included within the notification”.

The government stated they invested £5.6bn in the maintenance of school buildings since 2015, this includes funding for the removal of asbestos. They have stated the following:

“We expect all local authorities and academy trusts to have robust plans in place to safely manage asbestos in buildings, and provide detailed guidance for them on doing so,” a spokesman said.

“We have also recently launched the new Asbestos Management Assurance Process a scheme where schools have to provide written assurance that their schools are compliant with legislation on the management of asbestos to make sure they are following these requirements.”

Kent County Council have also recently been fined £200,000 over asbestos still contained in a school at Sittingbourne

Searching for an Asbestos Removal Contractor in Kent?

If you are a owner of a building built before 2000 and are planning to carry out redevelopment work or demolition you will need to make sure you have had an Asbestos Survey carried out.

Asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are either known to contain asbestos, or presumed to contain asbestos.  There are two types of Survey and Inner City Environmental can carry out these surveys for you.We are an Asbestos removal Contractor in Kent working in London and The South East.

Asbestos Removal Kent – Types of Asbestos Surveys

There are two types of survey for ACM (Asbestos Containing Materials)

    1. Management survey

The Management Survey purpose is required to manage ACM during the normal occupation and use of premises.

The duty-holder can make a Management Survey where the premises are simple and straightforward.

    Otherwise, a surveyor is needed.

    A Management Survey ensures that:

    • nobody is harmed by the continuing presence of ACM in a building or in equipment
    • that the ACM remain in sound conditon
    • that the ACM’s are not disturbed

The Survey must locate ACM that could be damaged or disturbed by normal day to day activities, by planned maintenance, or by installing new equipment.  It involves minor intrusion and minor asbestos disturbance to make a Materials Assessment.  This shows the ability of ACM, if disturbed, to release fibres into the air.  It guides the client in prioritising any removal work.

    2. Refurbishment / demolition survey

The Refurbishment / demolition Survey is required where the premises, or part of it, need refurbishment or demolition.  The Survey does not need to record the ACM condition.

An Inner City Environmental Surveyor can carry out the survey for you.

A Refurbishment / demolition Survey will aim to ensure that:

    • nobody will be harmed by work on ACM in the premises or equipment
    • the work will be done by an accredited contractor in the correct way

The Survey must locate and identify all Asbestos Containing materials before any structural work is started at a location.

It involves destructive inspection and asbestos disturbance so the area surveyed must be vacated, and certified ‘fit for reoccupation’ after the survey.
